Competition Ice Carver

Competition Ice Carver

I've been watching the TV show "Forged in Fire" lately.

Talk about heat, very often the contestants suffer from
heat related injuries, and one even left in an ambulance.

So much cooler working with Cheetah. ;)

Here's a design for a competition ice carving knife.

Nice!

I’ve watched that show a few times. My great grandfather was a blacksmith. Interesting trade. Takes a lot of strength as well as tolerance for heat. Definetly easier on the body in C3d.

8) Ice is a nice way to cool things down a bit.
Your Ice carving knives are quite fine!
The pattern on one of the knife blades is artfully impressive

I like the reflection of the wood on the knife blade.
I haven't tried to do anything like that.
Is there a special procedure to accomplish that effect?

Thanks Swizl.

Hi Jeanny, I used the Wood texture and put
it on the Reflection and the Diffuse channel.

It was pure luck as I don't know what most of the setting do for
the wood texture, but I kept trying till I got a good pattern.

I included a picture of real Damascus patterns.

:D Thanks Zoo!
Very clever way of achieving the pattern etched into the blade!
I wasn’t clear wording my inquiry about how to get a reflection on the knife blade.
What I meant to ask was: how did you get the reflection of the wood stickb on the knife?

So far in my sad attempt I used your White Spot background as background your wood matt on the stick,
Your Blue formica on the box and your HDRI: “entrancehall white”. I tried changing it’s rotation on the X axis a bit.

I also Don’t know where to begin with the light set up or the Render properties.

Thanks
Jeanny

Well done, of course. For my taste it's a bit too 3d-ish, i. e. a bit too clean, and the pattern doesn't really click with me (that doesn't say much about the pattern btw). I believe, you could get more out of this knife.

@Jeanny
It's like in photography. To get something reflected, you have to change the angle of the camera.

(For finding the right angle it can be helpful to turn up the reflectivity of the blade material to the hilt and then turn it down again till you get a good steel material)

And in your case i would change the angle of the blade, too. The more you turn it forward (down to the left, the more of the stick gets reflected)

It's just a matter of getting the angles right,
keep playing with it and you'll get it.

I used the Cheetah renderer, but either will work.

:D Thanks Hasdrubal and Zoo.

I'm just using an HDRI as light.

Do I need any other lights?

Thanks

:D Thanks again everyone.
I greatly appreciate all the advice!
Every tip and suggestion helped a lot!

Thanks for including your "Damascus" matt Zoo.
I think your creation is ingenious.

This proved to be a good learning experience for me.
Although the metal is a little too dark I'm happy I was able to get this far.

Should I make any Renderer property changes?

I am not going to try to make the knife.
What I was most interested in was creating the reflection of the wood spindle on the metal.

Jeanny
